Trauma-informed massage therapy (TIMT) takes into account the physical, mental, and emotional effects of trauma for an individual.
Trauma occurs when choice is taken away from an individual. TIMT aims to give the choice back to the client, creating a sense of safety and space to process, trust and heal.
The initial appointment for Trauma-Informed massage will include a longer interview portion, allowing the therapist to gain understanding of the needs of the patient. Conversations regarding comfort levels of undress, where the client would like to receive massage, and any other concerns that client may have will be thoroughly explored.
Massage is a wonderful treatment option for those who are dealing with anxiety, depression, PTSD, and any other effects of trauma. Trauma-informed massage is best pursued when other supports are in place.
